Our Purpose
The main object of the D.B.E. is the support of
the four District Homes, which were founded by the Society for
retired men and women who are residents and/or citizens of the
United States. This is made possible through regular contributions
by member's fund raising events, such as fashion shows, Silver
Teas, International Festivals, and craft and bake sales.
The Society provides a large network of members
across the United States, which can ease the transition for National
and International relocations through our common background and
understanding. We are a source of close and lasting friendships.
We encourage member contact with their District
Home and its residents to help with activities and entertainment.
We also participate in philanthropic endeavors in our own communities.
This frequently involves representation at local cultural and
civic occasions, such as the International Festival in Raleigh.
Membership
Membership is extended by invitation to women residing
in the U.S. who are of British or British Commonwealth heritage
by birth, naturalization or proven ancestry. Women whose husbands
are, or whose husbands parent(s) or grandparent(s) are,
of British or Commonwealth birth, are also eligible.
Organisation
The Society has Chapters in each organised State.
Seven eligible members are required to start a new Chapter. At
present we have approximately 240 chapters. The Chapters have
monthly meetings of no less than eight a year, and no meetings
through the Summer months. Fundraising events, socials and outings
are scheduled according to the Chapter's needs and interests.
Each State is administered by a Board of officers elected from
the membership, and includes a delegate from each Chapter in the
State. The Society has organised Chapters in 32 states. California,
due to the large population, is divided into three "mini"
States for ease of administration.
In States or cities where the Society has no representation, eligible
women may join the Society as Members at Large. The Society will
assist such members to locate and contact potential members in
their area.
The states are organised into four Districts in the United States;
the East, the Midwest, the West, and the South. The governing
body of the organisation is the National Board which is elected
every three years and rotates through the four geographical Districts.
The National Board holds a convention each May at
different locations, where State Presidents, delegates and members
gather to discuss the business of the Society.
